Social activist Ruth Gottstein was director of Glide Publications in San Francisco in the 1970's and early 1980's. In 1984,
she bought Glide Publications and moved to Volcano, in Amador County, California. The renamed Volcano Press has specialized
in publishing and distributing books relating to domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, youth and elder issues, and
health care.
